Discover Terry’s treatment journey

See how his positive outlook on life continues to shine through.

Continuing to enjoy life

For Terry, looking at the positive side of life has always been important. Even after being diagnosed with cancer, he was determined to continue enjoying the activities that brought him joy and a sense of normality.

Thanks to Pharmaxo Healthcare’s homecare treatment service, Terry has been able to maintain his active lifestyle while receiving life-saving immunotherapy in the comfort of his own home.

Tennis and music

Terry’s love for tennis began with a cheap old racket and a local tennis club. What started as a pastime evolved into a lifelong passion, including playing league tennis, coaching, and running groups at the club. Despite his diagnosis, Terry never let cancer slow him down.

I’ve been playing tennis since I was 28 years old and coaching for over 20 years,” Terry shared. “If the weather is dry, I’ll always be out playing on the courts. Even after treatment in the morning, I’d be back playing that same afternoon.

Terry also cherishes his extensive music collection, finding solace and relaxation in the familiarity of putting on an album.

“Music has always been a part of my life,” he said. “There’s something special about the feel and ritual of listening to music, whether it’s vinyl, cassettes, or CDs.”

Terry’s diagnosis

In July 2020, Terry received a diagnosis of metastatic melanoma. Surgery wasn’t an option due to the spread of the tumours.

Instead, his medical team prescribed immunotherapy, aiming to contain and shrink the tumours. Initially, Terry received treatment at the hospital, but in January 2021, he was offered the option of homecare through Pharmaxo Healthcare.

I didn’t mind going to the hospital, but it’s a big place, and it can feel overwhelming. At home, it’s one-on-one, more relaxed, and personal,” Terry explained. “The nurses come in, set everything up, and make the process seamless. It’s just a short interlude in my day.

Homecare experience

Home treatment transformed Terry’s experience with immunotherapy. Pharmaxo delivered his medication to his home, where it was stored until a nurse arrived to administer the treatment.

This arrangement allowed Terry to stay in his familiar surroundings, listen to music, and relax during the process.

“The nurses build a rapport with you,” Terry said. “It’s more personal and human, less clinical. They’d ask how I was feeling, set up everything, and then we’d chat before starting the infusion. It made me feel comfortable and supported.”

Life, on his terms

The flexibility of homecare meant Terry could continue living life on his terms. Whether playing tennis, spending time with his wife, or enjoying his music, his life largely remained the same despite his diagnosis.

After initially undergoing four months of immunotherapy at the hospital, Terry transitioned to a single-drug treatment every four weeks at home. In 2022, he participated in a clinical trial, which required pausing his homecare for a year.

Unfortunately, his cancer returned, and he resumed immunotherapy. When Pharmaxo called to offer him the option to restart home treatment, Terry didn’t hesitate.

“I was on the tennis court when I got the call,” Terry recalled. “I said ‘absolutely’ and had a burst of energy that day, playing some of my best tennis.”

Three years later

Now, after three years of immunotherapy, Terry feels good and continues to thrive.

Home care has been such a positive experience. It’s more comfortable, fits around my life, and helps me maintain normality. I’d recommend Pharmaxo homecare to anyone.

By bringing treatment to his home, Pharmaxo has enabled him to focus on the things he loves most – tennis, music, and spending time with family and friends, proving that even in the face of adversity, life can still be full of joy and purpose.
